Legal Practice Manager - Energy Department

Overview

As Practice Manager, you will serve as a strategic liaison for the Department Chair and the newly formed energy department, driving performance and operational efficiency. You will partner with finance, attorneys, and business teams to ensure excellent client service and execution of strategic initiatives. The role focuses on governance, budgeting, and resource alignment to support both business objectives and attorney development. You will engage cross-functionally to implement improvements and leverage AI tools to boost high-impact work.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with the Department Chair to set short- and long-term business goals and implement aligned solutions
  • Oversee strategic initiatives, leadership development, and business process improvements
  • Prepare materials for internal reviews, partner meetings, and planning sessions
  • Monitor key performance indicators with the department financial advisor and advise on performance
  • Oversee accounts receivable and unbilled time; escalate issues to the chair as needed
  • Assist in budgeting for interoffice travel and department meetings in collaboration with the chair
  • Manage day-to-day operations and be the primary point of contact for the department
  • Track workloads, billable hours, productivity, and time entry compliance; escalate anomalies
  • Review client intake, conflicts, and billing rate exceptions; escalate issues appropriately
  • Improve productivity, collaboration, and knowledge sharing among attorneys and staff
  • Coordinate scheduling, agenda development, and follow-up for internal department and partner meetings
  • Align attorney skills, experience, and availability with client needs for optimal resources
  • Provide cross-functional insights and ensure timely communication of firm initiatives and policies
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five years of relevant experience with increasing responsibility in a professional services environment preferred
  • Highly organized with strong prioritization and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to work effectively with lawyers and professional staff at all levels
  • Strong client-service orientation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, problem-solve, and be a team player
  • Interest in using AI technology (Harvey and Copilot) to support high-impact work
