Overview

In this role you will serve as the subject-matter expert on export controls across SpaceX's launch, satellite, and AI programs. You will lead and refine the global trade compliance program, partnering with cross-functional teams to close control gaps and ensure ITAR/EAR compliance. You'll liaison with regulators and internal stakeholders, handling licenses, investigations, and policy updates. This work supports SpaceX's mission by enabling compliant innovation at scale and across diverse programs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert guidance on ITAR and EAR obligations for export-controlled commodities, software, data, and defense services
  • Drive program improvements for ITAR/EAR export compliance; draft policies and use technology tools to optimize processes
  • Collaborate with engineering on jurisdiction and classification determinations for hardware, software, and technology
  • Engage with the Departments of State and Commerce for regulator interpretations and authorizations
  • Prepare and manage export licenses and license exceptions as needed
  • Lead investigations into potential non-compliance, produce reports, implement corrective actions, and manage reporting requirements
  • Conduct internal compliance audits and drive continuous policy improvements
  • Build strong advisory relationships with internal business partners
Key requirements
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • 3+ years in a corporate legal department or law firm advising on U.S. federal regulatory matters including export controls, sanctions, or trade matters
  • Strong written and spoken communication
  • Trusted advisor to internal partners
  • Ability to work with ambiguous problems and take initiative
  • Comprehensive knowledge of U.S. export laws (ITAR, EAR) and U.S. economic sanctions
  • Experience drafting advisory opinions to U.S. federal agencies (State, Commerce, Treasury)
  • Due diligence and legal risk analysis in trade compliance
