Claims Manager - Casualty Programs

Overview

In this role you will lead AXIS's North America Casualty Programs claims team, focusing on oversight of claims, coverage analysis, and strategic direction. You will develop and mentor a team of adjusters, collaborate with internal partners and external stakeholders, and drive cost management and outcomes on large losses. This position offers cross-functional exposure across underwriting, litigation, and vendor management within a values-driven culture. You will influence strategy on coverage disputes and NY Labor Law matters, shaping a best-in-class claims organization.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee investigation, analysis, and evaluation of coverage, liability, and damages for assigned claims
  • Provide technical guidance and training to reports and TPAs
  • Recruit, hire, and develop claims staff with succession planning
  • Assess loss nature, coverage, and scope to guide settlements and disposition
  • Lead collaboration with Specialty Complex Claims on disputes, litigation, and arbitration
  • Formulate claims and litigation strategies; manage outside counsel and costs
  • Maintain relationships with internal/external partners (senior executives, brokers, reinsurers, actuaries, underwriters, insureds)
  • Support underwriting inquiries; report trends, data, and risk assessments
  • Lead and participate in meetings with program/TPA partners, audits, and results reporting
  • Identify coverage trends and portfolio impacts; standardize claims management across lines
  • Coach and mentor direct reports; partner with HR for development
  • Exhibit best-in-class claim handling aligned with AXIS values
Key requirements
  • 5-10+ years of claims management experience in Casualty and/or Specialty Lines
  • Proven leadership and collaboration skills across organizational levels
  • Strong analytical thinking with ability to resolve complex disputed claims
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; manage conflicting expectations
  • Experience handling casualty claims and presenting to senior management
  • Deep knowledge of claims processes, litigation, arbitration, and trial
  • Juris Doctor preferred
  • Technical knowledge: complex coverage analysis, evaluation, and reserving; negotiation and settlement skills
  • Supervisory experience with direction to adjusters; KPI, data, and metrics familiarity a plus
