Overview As Senior Patent Counsel at Generate Biomedicines, you will safeguard and shape our global patent estates for biologics and platform technologies, partnering with R&D, regulatory, and business teams. You'll lead drafting, prosecution, and portfolio management while coordinating with outside counsel to support collaborations and strategic transactions. You'll translate complex science into robust IP strategies, ensuring freedom-to-operate and competitive positioning in a fast-paced, collaborative biotech environment. Responsibilities- Identify and capture inventions with protection strategies (patent/trade-secret/combined) in collaboration with R&D and platform teams
- Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications; manage a complex global patent estate with outside counsel
- Oversee day-to-day portfolio matters including prosecution strategy, deadlines, docketing, and budget
- Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and landscape analyses with clear, practical recommendations
- Support IP aspects of collaborations, licenses, sponsored research, and vendor agreements
- Review publications and external disclosures for patent opportunities, coordinating with inventors and counsel
- Educate scientists and management on IP principles and monitor legal developments affecting strategy
Key requirements- Juris Doctor from a reputable law school and admission to at least one state bar and the USPTO
- 5-8 years of patent law experience in biotechnology, with both in-house and law firm background preferred
- Advanced biology/biochemistry degree (MS/PhD) strongly preferred
- Direct experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications and managing global portfolios
- Experience with IP transactions (due diligence, licensing, collaboration agreements)
- Experience with adversarial proceedings (patent litigation or USPTO) preferred but not required
- Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills; strong business judgment and adaptability
