Overview

In this hybrid role, you handle complex insurance defense cases from filing to resolution, working closely with claims and business partners. You will manage moderate to high-exposure civil litigation, guiding matters through discovery, settlement, or trial. You collaborate with adjusters and clients to resolve claims efficiently while upholding Hanover's CARE values. This position offers hands-on trial exposure, cross-functional teamwork, and opportunities to broaden expertise across related legal areas. Responsibilities
  • Meet with clients and claims professionals to resolve cases cost-effectively
  • Conduct pre-trials, mediations, arbitrations, and other required legal activities
  • May independently conduct trials
  • Advise claim professionals on evaluations of legal files
  • Provide legal advice to clients and claim professionals as needed
  • Negotiate settlements as directed
  • Attend round table discussions on case status and trial preparedness
Key requirements
  • Preferred: insurance defense trial experience
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable MVR; ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Admitted to the Virginia Bar and licensed to practice law
  • Ability to work in a team with attorneys, adjusters, and staff
  • Computer literacy: MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, email/calendar management
  • Strong advocacy for moderate to complex cases
  • Proven negotiation skills to influence outcomes
  • Clear communication translating legal concepts to lay terms

  • Excellent organization and prioritization
  • Investigative skills with careful evidence handling
  • Legal research proficiency to interpret statutes and precedents
  • Courtroom skills and appropriate conduct; willingness to explore related areas (employment, professional liability)
