Overview In this role, you will shape and elevate opinion journalism at The New York Times by guiding world-class columnists and long-form storytelling. You'll drive the department's editorial direction, recruit diverse voices, and oversee high-impact narratives that resonate with a wide audience. You'll collaborate across design, multimedia, and audience teams to maximize reach while upholding intellectual honesty and literary excellence. Responsibilities- Conceptualize and execute ambitious editorial projects and series beyond daily news
- Manage and edit a portfolio of columnists with guidance on narrative arc, voice, and argument
- Partner with design, multimedia and audience teams to maximize impact
- Identify, recruit, and mentor diverse new voices to broaden coverage
- Oversee commentary lifecycle from pitch to publication ensuring standards of honesty and excellence
- Mentor junior editors and staff to foster rigorous editing and professional growth
- Collaborate with senior leadership to set strategic editorial direction and anticipate cultural shifts
- Support and advance the value of journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth
Key requirements- 8+ years in senior editorial roles at a major national publication
- Strong editing portfolio shaping public discourse or award-winning pieces
- Proven ability to edit high-profile writers with sensitivity and authority
