Overview

In this role you drive materials flow for production by managing suppliers, planning purchases, and coordinating external sourcing. You work with engineers, operations, and suppliers to ensure on-time delivery, quality, and cost efficiency within a heavy manufacturing setting. You will optimize inventory, support ERP/MRP workflows, and lead cost-reduction initiatives. The position offers full benefits from day one and opportunities to influence supply chain performance.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the supplier base and explore new contracts as appropriate
  • Negotiate price, terms, and on-time delivery expectations with suppliers
  • Collaborate with suppliers, engineers, and operations to resolve quality and delivery issues
  • Coordinate engineering changes affecting purchased material
  • Provide purchasing support for production and manage temporary outsourcing
  • Maintain proper inventory levels and adhere to purchasing policies
  • Manage requisitions and issue POs to meet objectives
  • Monitor supplier performance and intervene to correct issues
  • Make decisions/recommendations with potential operational impact
  • Implement cost-reduction initiatives related to purchased products
  • Maintain MRP material master settings per guidelines
  • Respond to market price and product availability trends impacting targets
  • Interact with multiple work groups and internal customers
  • Participate in or lead special projects as required
Key requirements
  • Minimum of five years' experience in an industrial purchasing position
  • Direct material purchasing experience in a heavy manufacturing environment
  • Proficient Microsoft Office and strong Excel skills
  • Proven ERP/MRP systems experience
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand manufacturing processes
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical problem-solving abilities
  • Preferred knowledge of heavy manufacturing commodities and railroad specifications
  • APICS CSCP or CPIM (preferred)
