Claim Counsel - Design Professional Claim

Overview

In this role you will handle professional liability claims for design professionals, providing legal guidance to underwriting and claims teams while advancing claim strategy. You will manage investigations, settlements, and outside counsel, aligning claims outcomes with underwriting goals. You'll influence policy interpretation, recovery opportunities, and market-facing initiatives with a focus on service quality and risk management. This position offers cross-functional collaboration, exposure to complex professional liability matters, and opportunities to shape claim practices at Travelers.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and resolve BSI claims with moderate supervision
  • Prepare management reports on loss development, exposure, reserves, and strategies
  • Manage outside counsel with litigation plans and budgets
  • Communicate significant claim exposures to underwriting
  • Identify and coordinate recovery opportunities with Recovery Management Unit
  • Attend mediations, conferences, trials, and depositions
  • Draft coverage opinions with supporting case law
  • Negotiate settlements and review releases including NDAs
  • Support underwriting marketing through broker visits and risk mitigation content
  • Monitor market conditions and draft references for claim/underwriting decisions
  • Obtain and maintain adjuster licenses
  • Perform other assigned duties
Key requirements
  • Five or more years of relevant legal or claim handling experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Juris Doctorate Degree
  • Licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction
  • Two years of relevant legal experience
  • Ability to travel occasionally
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and collaboration abilities
  • Professional demeanor under pressure
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building
  • Legal analysis of coverage and case law
  • Drafting coverage opinions
  • Negotiation of settlements and terms
