Overview As Senior Counsel, you will partner with Markel's Global Ceded Reinsurance team to deliver end-to-end legal support for outwards reinsurance, ILS programs, and related agreements. You will structure, draft, and negotiate contracts, trusts, and collateral arrangements across Bermuda, London, and the US, ensuring regulatory compliance and alignment with global wording standards. You'll work cross-functionally with underwriting, finance, claims, and external counsel to manage risk and execution. This role offers exposure to innovative ILS structures and cross-border transactions that drive Markel's reinsurance capabilities. Responsibilities- Draft and finalize reinsurance and related agreements for outward placements
- Negotiate terms to align with Markel's intent and protect its interests
- Manage ILS-related contracts, trusts, RTFA structures, and ILW arrangements
- Oversee Bermuda regulatory engagements and governance for ILS activities
- Maintain and enhance standard wording libraries and ensure alignment with industry practices
- Coordinate with internal teams and external counsel to enable timely execution of documents
- Support fronting arrangements, quota shares, and related frameworks in collaboration with Nephila and brokers
- Embed credit and concentration risk controls into master language and MOUs
Key requirements- 8+ years in (re)insurance transactional work
- Deep knowledge of fronting, quota shares, trust agreements, ILWs, collateralized ILS programs
- Transactional drafting and negotiation experience
- BMA regulatory fluency and governance experience
- Credit, collateral and concentration risk acumen
- Strong written and verbal communication, cross-border negotiation skills
- Solid understanding of US, Bermuda, and UK re/insurance law
- Ability to work in a global, remote-capable team environment
- US Work Authorization (no visa sponsorship)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and related tools
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong negotiating and relationship-building abilities
- Attention to detail
- Knowledge of Bermuda insurance regulation and BMA filings
- Experience with ILS products such as ILWs and RTFA structures
