Overview In this role you will provide high quality legal services to the Commonwealth's natural resources agencies, including advice and litigation. You will act as lead counsel in environmental matters, advise on statutory and regulatory authority, and monitor evolving environmental regulation. You will collaborate with agencies, boards, and authorities to ensure legal compliance and effective dispute resolution, contributing to environmental protection and public service. Responsibilities- Serve as lead counsel in environmental matters before administrative and judicial forums, managing all aspects of litigation
- Provide primary legal advice to the Commonwealth's natural resources agencies, boards, and authorities on statutory and regulatory authority
- Monitor state and federal environmental developments and translate them into actionable guidance
- Perform bill reviews during General Assembly sessions
- Identify issues, conduct discovery, work with experts, and prepare briefs and hearings materials
Key requirements- Ability to understand complex legal matters and factual scenarios related to natural resources law and procedures
- Knowledge of Virginia Administrative Process Act, Virginia Freedom of Information Act, and Conflicts of Interest Act
- Ability to represent complex political and legal interests while seeking favorable resolutions
- Legal research proficiency and experience briefing and arguing cases in state and federal courts
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to organize work, set priorities, and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Office Suite, NetDocuments, LawBase, Adobe Acrobat DC, Google Earth, and Google Maps
