Overview In this role you will steer BorgWarner's global patent strategy and portfolio health. You will partner with engineers and technical leaders to identify high value innovations and craft defensible filings. You'll lead competitive IP analyses and provide risk guidance to influence product development and business decisions. You will work closely with senior IP leadership on cross functional initiatives, shaping the company's technology strategy and growth.
Responsibilities- Lead strategic development of the patent portfolio and align coverage with technology roadmaps and business priorities
- Conduct IP analytics and competitive intelligence to inform filing strategies and R&D investment decisions
- Manage freedom-to-operate evaluations and advise on third party patent risks with mitigation plans
- Execute IP projects under senior guidance, including due diligence for M&A and technology partnerships, licensing evaluations, and NDA support
- Serve as IP advisor to engineering and product teams, providing training and translating complex concepts for business decisions
Key requirements- Juris Doctor (JD) and licensed to practice in the United States
- Admission to USPTO
- 5-10 years of IP law experience including patent drafting, prosecution, and advising technical teams
- Experience in IP risk analysis, portfolio management, and patent strategy
- Strong communication, analytical, and project management skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced technical environment
