Overview In this role you join the Appeals Division to defend Massachusetts convictions and criminal justice matters in state and federal courts. You will handle a heavy caseload across appellate and civil litigation, contributing to investigations, trial teams, policy work, and amicus activity. The position supports public service and collaboration across agencies, with a hybrid work model and Boston or regional office locations. You will shape legal strategies in high-stakes appeals and habeas matters, driving fair outcomes and constitutional challenges. Compensation / Benefits- hybrid work model with some remote days
Responsibilities- Handle a large caseload of criminal and civil matters in state and federal trial and appellate courts
- Manage appeals and post-conviction matters in multiple Massachusetts courts and federal venues
- Contribute to federal habeas actions and appellate work in the First Circuit
- Represent officials and agencies in civil suits or document/testimony cases arising from criminal justice actions
- Defend statutes, rules, practices, and procedures challenged on constitutional grounds
- Contribute to criminal investigations, trial teams, policy initiatives, and amicus activities
Key requirements- Must be a practicing attorney and a member of the Massachusetts bar
- Must be eligible for admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the First Circuit Court of Appeals
- Minimum of three years of appellate practice or related litigation emphasizing written and oral advocacy, civil litigation and discovery
- Ability to handle a large, varied caseload and complex cases
