Overview In this role you will support the Criminal Appeals & Federal Habeas Corpus Bureau by handling appellate litigation for criminal prosecutions. You will draft briefs and motion papers, argue in state and federal courts, and advise prosecutors on criminal matters. You will also address federal habeas petitions challenging state court outcomes and collaborate to shape legal strategy across bureaus. Responsibilities- Draft briefs and motion papers for federal and state appellate courts
- Present oral argument in appellate and trial courts
- Represent the state in appellate litigation arising from criminal prosecutions
- Respond to federal habeas corpus petitions and constitutional challenges to state actions
- Provide legal advice to state prosecutors and other OAG staff
- Intervene in cases where state statutes' constitutionality is challenged
- Collaborate with bureaus such as Public Integrity, Criminal Enforcement and Financial Crimes, Organized Crime Task Force, and Medicaid Fraud Control Unit
Key requirements- Minimum of three years of legal experience
- Prior criminal appellate experience or clerkship
- Admission to practice law in New York state
- Reside in or intend to become a New York resident
- U.S. citizen
