Overview In this role you lead the substation scope within large multidisciplinary EPC programs, focusing on technical delivery and coordination with contractor partners. You will advise clients on technical, regulatory, and execution aspects of substation development, and oversee site layout, electrical design, permitting, and integration. You'll drive execution plans, manage risks, and mentor a multidisciplinary team to ensure alignment with program goals. Responsibilities- Lead substation scope within large EPC infrastructure programs; coordinate with EPC contractor for construction
- Advise clients on technical, regulatory, and execution aspects of substation development (site development, design, permitting, constructability, outages, P&C, equipment strategy)
- Oversee site selection, engineering (physical, electrical, protection & controls, grounding, SCADA/communications), environmental planning, permitting, land use
- Support procurement and long-lead equipment strategies; provide construction support and field coordination
- Coordinate outages, energization, and commissioning activities; interface between owner, engineering, and EPC contractor
- Collaborate with transmission, system planning, real estate, and environmental teams for integration
- Identify risks (lead times, outages, system integration, contractor execution); support risk mitigation and decisions
- Develop execution plans and tools for substation scope; improve contractor coordination and transparency
- Oversee design and construction activities for client compliance and QA/QC; manage HDR staff and subconsultants
- Monitor scope, schedule, and budget; support change management and align with program goals
- Engage with clients, utilities, agencies, and stakeholders on permitting and technical challenges
- Mentor staff working on substation projects; perform other duties as needed
Key requirements- Professional Engineering (PE) License
- Significant experience in substation design and/or EPC delivery
- Experience delivering or overseeing high-voltage substation projects (69kV-500kV+)
- U.S. citizenship due to government contract requirements
- Strong understanding of substation design standards, protection & control, permitting, and construction methods
- Experience with EPC contractors or construction partners
- Familiarity with EPC, P3, DBFOM delivery models
- PMO experience and PMP certification
- Willingness to travel and support field coordination
- Bachelor's degree in related field; 10 years related experience; minimum 5 years of project management experience
- Microsoft Office, estimating and scheduling software, project management software; strong written and verbal communication skills
