Overview In this Senior Business Development Underwriter role, you'll manage and grow a profitable book of business within assigned lines, acting as a senior underwriting and distribution partner to agents and internal stakeholders. You'll underwrite complex risks, set pricing strategies, and guide cross-sell initiatives to boost Commercial Lines growth. You'll lead agency engagement and provide strategic underwriting guidance to partners, shaping distribution and product positioning. Responsibilities- Underwrite and price moderately to complex risks in line with guidelines
- Maintain profitability, growth, and retention of the portfolio
- Evaluate risk characteristics (operations, financials, management, loss history)
- Exercise advanced underwriting judgment to structure pricing and risk management
- Explain complex pricing structures and controls (retros, deductibles, large accounts)
- Monitor portfolio performance and take corrective actions to meet targets
- Stay current on regulatory and rating changes
- Drive new business production and cross-sell opportunities through proactive agency engagement
- Develop and manage a high-performing producer base aligned with strategy
- Mentor junior underwriters and guide agency management and deal structure
- Lead complex account and pricing discussions with agents and insureds
- Provide underwriting and distribution guidance to agents for complex risks
- Deliver responsive service and strategic recommendations to leadership and agencies
- Participate in training, onboarding, and knowledge sharing
- Contribute to special projects and process improvements
- Travel up to 50-75% for client meetings and events
- Operate in a hybrid work environment
Key requirements- Minimum 5 years underwriting experience; 7+ years preferred
- Proven ability to underwrite complex risks and apply advanced underwriting judgment
- Strong business development, negotiation, and relationship management skills
- Ability to balance underwriting discipline with production and cross-sell expectations across Commercial Lines
- Experience evaluating submissions, financials, and loss data for decision-making
- Advanced knowledge of Commercial Lines products, including Workers' Compensation or Commercial Package
- Ability to mentor, coach, and influence others
