Overview

In this role, you lead applied ML efforts to power next-generation journalism through AI-enabled search, retrieval, ranking, and reader experiences. You collaborate across teams to translate ambiguous challenges into measurable scientific problems and deploy scalable AI solutions. You'll shape exploration and production systems for conversational search and content understanding, making an impact on both journalism and reader engagement. Responsibilities
  • Lead applied research and development for AI/ML systems across generative AI, search, retrieval, ranking, content understanding, and recommendation
  • Frame product and business problems as scientific experiments with clear metrics and success criteria
  • Design, train, evaluate, and deploy advanced AI/ML models (LLMs, embeddings, VLMs, learning-to-rank, agentic workflows) and efficient serving for conversational search
  • Develop AI-powered experiences (Ask The Post, semantic search, content understanding, QA, ranking, intelligent discovery)
  • Design offline and online evaluations (relevance, ranking metrics, A/B testing, causal analysis)
  • Build scalable production ML systems with attention to latency, reliability, cost, monitoring, maintainability
  • Analyze large-scale behavioral, content, and interaction data to guide improvements
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, data teams, product managers, editors, and business stakeholders to deliver impactful AI/ML solutions
  • Provide technical leadership by shaping roadmaps, mentoring, and promoting scientific rigor
  • Communicate approaches, tradeoffs, results, and business impact to technical and non-technical audiences
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, or a related technical field
  • 4+ years in applied machine learning, AI, data science, information retrieval, NLP, or related field
  • Strong Python experience and proficiency with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX
  • Experience designing, evaluating, and deploying ML models with large-scale datasets
  • Solid foundation in ML, statistics, experimental design, and model evaluation
  • Experience with search, ranking, retrieval, NLP, GenAI, or recommender systems
  • Clear communication
