Overview In this role you lead field operations for complex microtunneling, trenchless, and underground construction projects. You will supervise tunneling crews, coordinate MTBM setup and operations, and ensure safety, quality, and schedule adherence. You work closely with survey, engineering, and project teams to optimize production and handle equipment needs. This is a hands-on leadership position focused on delivering underground infrastructure efficiently and safely, with a strong emphasis on field execution and problem-solving.
Responsibilities- Lead daily field operations for microtunneling, tunneling, and trenchless construction projects
- Supervise Tunnel Technicians, operators, mechanics, laborers, and field personnel
- Coordinate MTBM setup, launch, operation, retrieval, maintenance, and demobilization
- Oversee operation and maintenance of tunneling boring machines and related systems
- Coordinate shaft construction, tunneling operations, pipe installation, spoil removal, and underground activities
- Monitor line and grade to meet project requirements
- Collaborate with survey, engineering, project management, and field teams
- Maintain inventories of materials, spare parts, tooling, and equipment
- Develop daily work plans and coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors
- Monitor production rates, crew productivity, and project progress
- Prepare daily reports, production records, and payroll documentation
- Support project leadership to maintain schedule and budget
- Identify and resolve field issues impacting safety, production, schedule, quality, or profitability
- Assist with hiring, training, and development of Tunnel Technicians and maintenance personnel
- Maintain strong communication between field crews, project management, engineering, and equipment personnel
Key requirements- 7+ years of tunneling or underground construction experience
- Strong microtunneling experience preferred
- Experience in leadership roles on field projects
- Strong knowledge of tunneling means and methods
- Experience with MTBM operations and supporting systems preferred
- Understanding of pipe jacking, shaft construction, underground utilities, and trenchless installation
- Proven ability to manage manpower, equipment, materials, and production
- Strong understanding of construction plans, line and grade, and field documentation
- History of maintaining productivity and profitability
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent leadership and communication skills
