Overview In this role you lead Western US construction execution for a diverse DER portfolio to deliver safe, on-time, and on-budget projects. You will drive consistency in construction management across EPC, design-build, and fixed-price work, while aligning engineering, procurement, and field execution. Responsibilities- Provide leadership for DER construction execution across multiple technologies (solar PV, BESS, EV infrastructure, microgrids, fuel cells)
- Deliver projects safely, on schedule, within budget, and per contract/standards
- Establish unified construction management standards, processes, and KPIs across the DER portfolio
- Lead construction for EPC, Design-Build, and fixed-price scopes (including self-perform and subcontractors)
- Oversee planning, mobilization, execution, commissioning, and turnover across regions
- Ensure integration between engineering, procurement, and construction for predictable delivery
- Drive continuous improvement in productivity, cost control, schedule performance, and risk management
- Champion a zero-incident safety culture and collaborate with Safety and Quality teams
- Maintain project portfolio financial oversight: cost forecasting, margins, change management, and cash flow
- Recruit, develop, and lead Construction Managers, Project Managers, Superintendents, and field leaders
- Build scalable teams capable of delivering complex, multi-site, and utility-scale DER projects nationally
- Set performance expectations aligned with McKinstry values and standards
- Foster cross-functional collaboration across construction, engineering, development, and supply chain
- Support workforce planning to match DER market growth
- Act as executive contact for key IPP, C&I, and utility clients during execution
- Maintain trusted client relationships through proactive communication and issue resolution
- Ensure delivery of contractual, technical, and commercial commitments to clients
- Participate in project kickoffs, progress reviews, and closeout meetings
- Collaborate with Development, Sales, and Estimating during pursuit, preconstruction, and negotiations
- Provide constructability input, execution strategy, staffing plans, and risk assessments during bids
- Participate in bid reviews, risk workshops, and contract reviews to ensure executable scopes
- Support growth of McKinstry's national DER EPC platform through disciplined execution
Key requirements- 12+ years of progressive construction leadership experience
- 5+ years in a senior leadership role
- Proven experience delivering solar, BESS, EV infrastructure, microgrids, or fuel cells at scale
- Strong background with Independent Power Producers, C&I clients, and utility customers
- Deep understanding of EPC contracting, risk management, subcontracting, and self-perform construction
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing large project portfolios and construction financials
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field; equivalent experience considered
