Job Description Job Description
HD Outdoor Construction is hiring an experienced Construction Superintendent to oversee the construction of clubhouses, recreation buildings, and amenity centers. This role is dedicated to vertical construction and will manage multiple building projects of varying sizes and stages of completion.
We are looking for a builder with substantial field experience and a thorough understanding of how buildings come together; from foundations and structural framing through mechanical systems, waterproofing, millwork, and final finishes. You must be able to read plans in detail, recognize problems before they are built, and give subcontractors clear, technically sound direction.
A strong background in custom-home construction is highly relevant, particularly work involving detailed architecture, complex trade coordination, and demanding finish standards. The depth of your building knowledge and your ability to lead work in the field matter more than your previous title.
The Role
This position is approximately 80% in the field and 20% in the office. You will direct subcontracted crews, coordinate work across multiple projects, and take ownership of field execution, quality, sequencing, and jobsite safety.
You need enough practical knowledge of each trade to evaluate its work, challenge an incorrect installation, and help resolve difficult conditions. Keeping a schedule and calling subcontractors are part of the job; understanding how to build is the foundation of it.
Responsibilities
- Oversee building construction from foundations through final inspections, punch work, and turnover.
- Direct subcontractors and hold them accountable for workmanship, schedule, safety, and jobsite organization.
- Read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP plans, specifications, details, and approved submittals. Identify conflicts, missing information, and constructability issues before they affect the work.
- Plan construction sequences so trades have the information, materials, access, and completed prerequisite work they need.
- Verify layouts, elevations, dimensions, rough openings, and installation conditions before work proceeds.
- Inspect work as it progresses, particularly before concrete placement, concealment, or installation of subsequent finishes.
- Coordinate structural work, MEP rough-ins, building enclosure, and interior finishes so systems fit and details are executed correctly.
- Work through field problems with subcontractors and the project manager, obtaining clarification from architects and engineers when required.
- Coordinate inspections and track deficiencies through correction.
- Manage priorities across multiple active projects and communicate issues early.
- Represent HD professionally in field meetings with owners, architects, engineers, and inspectors.
- Stay close to the work and be willing to get hands-on when needed to demonstrate a detail or work through a problem.
Required Experience & Skills
- Substantial experience supervising custom homes, clubhouses, amenity buildings, or similarly detailed building construction.
- Strong working knowledge of foundations, framing and structural systems, roofing, windows and doors, flashing, waterproofing, exterior cladding, insulation, drywall, cabinetry, trim, tile, and finish work.
- A practical understanding of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, including their installation requirements and coordination with structure and finishes.
- Excellent blueprint-reading skills, including the ability to connect information across architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
- The ability to recognize poor workmanship, explain why it is wrong, and direct corrective action.
- Strong judgment when plans are incomplete or field conditions differ from the drawings, including knowing when design clarification is necessary.
- Proven ability to lead experienced subcontractors, enforce standards, and maintain productive working relationships.
- Organization and follow-through sufficient to manage several projects at different stages.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally through email, field reports, and construction management software.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Compensation & Benefits
- A company truck or monthly vehicle allowance, fuel card, and EZ TAG.
- Paid vacation. We do not track personal time needed for family, kids, doctors, and similar responsibilities. We believe in Family First.
- Projects throughout Greater Houston.
- Compensation based on experience and capability, with opportunities to earn more as your contribution and responsibilities grow.
Applicants must have the practical building knowledge and field leadership experience to independently supervise this work.
