Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior PLC Programmer to serve as the primary controls programming resource for a privately held manufacturing company and its related operations across Texas and Louisiana. Reporting to the I&E Manager, this role will support all PLC related activities, from design and programming through commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing support, for both Capital Projects and daily Operations. The ideal candidate works with a high degree of independence and can take a project from a sequence of operations to a running system without outside support.
Responsibilities
- Write, modify, and optimize PLC programs from the ground up, including ladder logic, function block, and structured text, primarily on Allen-Bradley/Rockwell platforms (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix, SLC 500).
- Develop and maintain HMI and SCADA applications (FactoryTalk View SE/ME, Ignition, or similar) for plant monitoring and control.
- Write control narratives, sequences of operation, and functional specifications, and lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), startup, and commissioning of control systems.
- Configure and troubleshoot industrial networks and communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, DeviceNet, OPC), and integrate PLCs with instrumentation, VFDs, motor control centers, analyzers, and third-party skid packages.
- Tune PID control loops, migrate legacy control systems to current platforms with minimal disruption to operations, and diagnose complex control system problems in the field and remotely.
- Manage program backups, version control, change management, and cybersecurity and access practices for all control system code.
- Review and mark up electrical drawings, loop diagrams, P&IDs, and control panel layouts; specify PLC hardware, I/O, and network components, prepare cost and time estimates, and review vendor, integrator, and contractor work for quality and standards compliance.
- Train and mentor I&E Technicians and Operations personnel on control system operation and troubleshooting, and provide controls support during plant outages.
Skills and Qualifications
- Technical degree, High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- 10+ years of hands-on PLC programming experience in an industrial process environment.
- Expert-level proficiency with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell software (Studio 5000, RSLogix 500/5000, FactoryTalk View).
- Proven ability to independently design, program, and commission control systems with minimal supervision.
- Strong working knowledge of HMI/SCADA development, industrial networking, and instrumentation, including the ability to read electrical schematics, P&IDs, and loop drawings.
- Sound decision-making under pressure in live operating environments, with strong communication skills and the ability to transfer knowledge to others.
