Overview

In this role you will defend civil matters for insurance carriers and corporate clients, shaping defense strategies from intake through resolution. You will manage a busy caseload, coordinate with claims teams, and lead trial preparation to minimize risk and cost. You'll mentor junior staff and contribute to client meetings and business development. This position offers meaningful impact by driving effective defenses in auto, premises liability, and personal injury matters within a collaborative team.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a diverse caseload of civil defense matters from inception to resolution (auto, premises liability, personal injury).
  • Develop and execute defense strategies in collaboration with clients and claims teams, including coverage analysis and budgeting.
  • Draft and respond to pleadings, motions, discovery, and settlements; perform legal research and write memoranda.
  • Represent clients at depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials; coordinate with witnesses, experts, and investigators.
  • Advise on coverage issues, indemnity exposure, and claims handling to minimize risk and cost.
  • Negotiate settlements and manage resolution strategies aligned with client goals and cost containment.
  • Maintain accurate case records, meet deadlines, and communicate with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
  • Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, paralegals, and support staff; participate in client meetings and business development.
Key requirements
  • J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar license in relevant state(s)
  • 3+ years of civil litigation experience with defense focus; insurance defense and coverage experience preferred
  • Proven experience in auto, premises liability, and personal injury cases; trial and ADR experience
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy, strong legal research and drafting, attention to detail
  • Ability to assess risk, develop practical defense strategies, and communicate with clients and claims professionals
  • Ability to manage a busy caseload, prioritize tasks, and work independently or in a team
  • Familiarity with court rules, civil procedure, evidence rules, and e-filing; experience with litigation management software a plus
