Overview

As a Trial Attorney at CNA, you handle high complex insurance defense and coverage matters from pleadings to trial, shaping strategy and driving outcomes. You join a collaborative team focused on delivering superior legal solutions and risk management for insureds and clients. You lead and coach on litigation matters, manage stakeholders, and maintain rigorous case documentation. This role offers meaningful impact in a high-stakes environment with opportunities to advance organizational priorities.

Responsibilities
  • Handle complex insurance defense or coverage matters from pleadings through trial
  • Manage all phases of litigation preparation and develop case strategy
  • Direct preparation of litigation materials (briefs, motions, discovery, depositions, trial exhibits)
  • Advise on settlement versus trial decisions and push matters to resolution
  • Lead high-exposure bench and jury trials as first chair in state and federal courts
  • Oversee litigation management, including court appearances, motions, discovery, negotiations, settlements
  • Provide trial coaching and guidance to other attorneys
  • Maintain clear, concise communications with clients, claim professionals, and leadership
  • Conduct legal research and analyze issues to provide guidance
  • Prepare legal opinions and interpretations of issues
  • Counsel clients to avoid legally unsound decisions and monitor regulatory changes
  • May supervise or mentor attorneys and paralegals; train staff on procedures
  • Collaborate with clients, claim professionals, underwriting, risk control, and third parties
Key requirements
  • Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to PA and NJ state bars
  • Typically 10+ years of progressively responsible law firm or insurance claims experience
  • Trial and litigation experience with a track record of successful outcomes
  • Tort litigation experience
  • Senior-level knowledge of legal theories and litigation management within an insurance organization
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently with strong communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe, Westlaw, Filevine and case management systems
  • Discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive information
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills
