Overview

As Art Director at The New York Times T Brand Studio, you lead the visual execution of high-impact storytelling projects. You translate strategy into striking visuals, mentor design teams, and collaborate with clients and partners to elevate brand storytelling across digital and print. You shape mood, typography, color, and layout while guiding external collaborators. You'll work in a hybrid setting, driving design quality and journalistic independence in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee design work across client and internal projects with input from Design Directors and Creative Directors
  • Translate concepts into compelling visual solutions and mood boards
  • Contribute creative direction and feedback to improve design quality
  • Design iteratively with typography, composition, hierarchy, and layout to strengthen messaging
  • Research and curate visual references across design, illustration, photography, and animation
  • Manage Designers and delegate tasks to match workload and capabilities
  • Guide external collaborators to deliver best-in-class work
  • Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and the mission of seeking the truth
Key requirements
  • 5+ years in the art industry
  • 5+ years of experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Webflow; familiarity with Figma
  • Strong portfolio showing mastery of typography, grid systems, layout, color theory, and art direction for digital and print
  • Experience managing designers and giving constructive feedback
  • Experience commissioning and directing external creative partners
  • Experience presenting visual strategies to executive-level clients
  • Strong visual research skills and knowledge of contemporary and historical art and design trends
