Principal Applied Scientist

Overview

In this role you lead high-impact fraud-detection efforts within Microsoft Ads, building production ML solutions that protect advertiser ROI and user trust. You'll architect end-to-end, scalable systems that surface emerging attacks and stop them at scale, while mentoring teams and upholding reliability. The work blends advanced analytics with cross-functional collaboration to deliver measurable business impact in a rapidly evolving threat landscape. This is a chance to shape the platform's fraud-detection capabilities and drive responsible AI practice.

Responsibilities
  • Lead multiple high-impact fraud-detection initiatives from problem framing to measurable business outcomes
  • Develop production-grade ML solutions balancing detection performance, latency, resilience, and cost
  • Translate research insights into production impact via rigorous experimentation, rollout, monitoring and optimization
  • Apply advanced ML methods (anomaly detection, cross-signal analysis, LLMs) with robust evaluation and tests
  • Collaborate with science, engineering, ads, security, and privacy teams to operationalize research
  • Mentor scientists, raise scientific rigor, and ensure production reliability across solutions
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 6+ years of related experience OR Master's with 4+ years OR Doctorate with 3+ years, or equivalent experience
  • Proven track record in statistics, predictive analytics, or research
  • Strong software engineering and system design skills, including model operationalization and experimentation frameworks
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management
  • Experience delivering ML solutions to production at scale
  • Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements
