Overview In this role you will lead regulatory counsel for a major energy utility, shaping policy and regulatory strategy across FERC and state commissions. You will guide legal perspectives for key operational units and manage outside counsel, aligning litigation and regulatory risk with corporate goals. You will represent the company in court and hearings, while mentoring junior attorneys and contributing to policy development. This is a high-impact position that connects legal strategy with the company's regulatory and business objectives.
Responsibilities- Provide legal counsel and direction to major operational units
- Represent the company in court, formal hearings, and regulatory hearings
- Manage outside counsel and guide less experienced attorneys
- Handle complex legal and regulatory matters aligned with strategic goals
- Draft and negotiate agreements on compliance, litigation, IP, and risk management
- Establish policies and procedures consistent with legal principles
- Monitor industry trends and pursue ongoing professional development
- Interface with senior management on litigation reserves and accruals
- Participate in contract negotiation and ensure regulatory compliance
- Provide training to attorneys and support staff
- Ensure appropriate application of laws and regulations related to corporate activities
Key requirements- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
- Bar admission in one or more states where the company conducts business
- Minimum of ten years of law firm experience
- Deep knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory issues
- Familiarity with political and legal implications of company decisions
- Strong management and negotiation skills
- Excellent oral and written communication abilities
- Knowledge of the company's regulatory and political environment
