Overview In this role you provide legal support to a Midwest utility, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and agreements. You will interact with regulators and internal business units to advise on contracts, litigation, and regulatory matters. You help manage risk, lead legal initiatives, and coordinate with external counsel as needed. The opportunity sits at the intersection of regulatory affairs and business strategy, offering impact through prudent legal guidance and negotiations. You will work in a fast-paced environment, balancing deadlines with shifting priorities to support MEC's goals.
Responsibilities- Represent before regulatory agencies and prepare materials for hearings
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts
- Provide legal compliance guidance and preventive law training
- Manage disputes, litigation, and relationships with outside counsel
- Analyze business opportunities from a legal perspective
- Provide legal advice to multiple business units
- Monitor and apply relevant laws and regulations
- Coordinate with internal teams and manage time-sensitive tasks
Key requirements- Law degree from an accredited law school
- Licensed to practice in Iowa or licensed in one state with Iowa licensure within one year
- Six years of legal experience
- Experience in regulated industry, regulatory agency, or law firm preferred
- Strong oral and written communication, good judgment, leadership, and ownership
- Proficiency in interpreting and applying laws in area of expertise
- Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Ability to handle heavy workload, deadlines, and travel as needed
