Tax Director, State & Local Tax

Overview

As a State & Local Tax Director, you will guide the SALT practice in client relationships, research strategy, and business development, partnering with Principals and Managing Directors to elevate project execution and technical leadership. You'll lead high-impact tax projects, resolve complex SALT issues, and drive collaboration across tax specialties. This role combines client-centric service with practice development to deliver exceptional SALT outcomes. You'll leverage deep SALT expertise to shape solutions and mentor teams, contributing to a culture of quality and growth.

Responsibilities
  • Lead research and state guidance analysis to formulate positions and strategic outreach
  • Oversee timely, accurate SALT compliance and identify opportunities to optimize client obligations
  • Draft formal memos and guidance on state tax treatment and respond to tax authorities
  • Coordinate with Core and Specialized Tax Services to resolve complex SALT matters
  • Act as SALT industry expert for designated clients and identify cross-selling opportunities
  • Review and oversee ASC 740/ASC 450 tax provisions and related accruals
  • Drive business development through industry groups, marketing campaigns, and collaboration with BD team
  • Supervise SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff, including performance evaluations and training
Key requirements
  • Nine (9) or more years of SALT experience
  • Prior supervisory experience of tax professionals
  • CPA or equivalent certification (preferred)
  • Bachelor in Accounting (required)
  • Master in Accounting/Taxation (preferred)
  • Juris Doctorate (preferred)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word; familiar with tax applications and research tools (preferred)
  • Strong verbal and written communication, analytical and organizational skills
