Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Overview

As Senior I&C Engineer, you will lead large, complex projects and oversee a discipline team to engineer instrumentation and control systems for water facilities. You'll design, specify, and coordinate I&C across DCS/SCADA/PLC platforms, while guiding scope, budget, and schedule. You'll engage with clients, manage multidisciplinary coordination, and ensure quality from design through commissioning. This role blends technical leadership with project delivery in a mission-driven water resources firm.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver large, complex projects with I&C focus
  • Engineer and specify all I&C systems for projects
  • Create design artifacts (sketches, models, diagrams) and develop documentation
  • Manage project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule
  • Coordinate with internal teams, owners, contractors, and vendors
  • Prepare specifications and construction documents; participate in constructability reviews
  • Oversee quality assurance/quality control on own and peers' projects
  • Develop and maintain standards for the electrical group and support proposals for smaller projects
  • Serve as Engineer of Record and stay current with I&C trends in water industry
  • Design facility-wide DCS, SCADA, and PLC process automation; implement data acquisition and alarming
  • Conduct field reviews and support commissioning activities
  • Prepare process control descriptions for system integrators
  • Travel as required (occasional international) and mentor junior staff
Key requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (or related) with 15+ years of instrumentation and controls experience
  • Professional Engineer license in Controls Systems or Electrical Engineering in Arizona, or ability to reciprocity/obtain within 18 months
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Ability to mentor staff and collaborate across virtual or in-person teams
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and travel as needed
