Northern California Business Development Leader (Water Business Group)

Overview

In this role you drive strategic business development for HDR's water-focused services in Northern California, aligning with regional leadership to win projects in drinking water, wastewater, and water resources. You'll expand key client networks, shape pursuit strategies, and mentor teams, working closely with Market Sector Leaders and Project Managers. The position blends relationship building, market development, and cross-group collaboration to extend HDR's footprint in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a high-impact, client-facing role within an employee-owned culture that values inclusion and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement annual plans aligned with net fees booked goals
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with key decision makers at targeted clients
  • Collaborate with leaders to pursue opportunities and leverage project experiences
  • Maintain and utilize HDR's business systems and tools for BD data
  • Coordinate with marketing to create collateral and support proposals
  • Lead pursuit teams in proposal and interview content and strategy
  • Represent HDR at conferences and professional associations to generate business contacts
  • Serve as Project Principal or Project Manager for key clients and monitor satisfaction
  • Mentor mid- and junior staff in business development and marketing best practices
  • Understand and apply HDR's risk management and Matrix of Authority in opportunities
Key requirements
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant industry experience
  • Self-starter with ability to work with limited oversight
  • Deep knowledge of A/E/C procurement of professional services
  • Proven ability to motivate others and build client networks
  • Experience in sales and win strategy development
  • Strong financial acumen and negotiation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel and engage in person
  • Experience drafting compelling content from technical staff and growing programs in competitive markets
  • Proven success in winning high-value contracts in A/E/C
