Overview

In this Senior Accountant role, you will strengthen the integrity of financial data to support strategic decisions across The Washington Post's Finance team. You'll work within the Financial Accounting and Reporting group to deliver accurate statements and insightful analyses. You'll apply GAAP, drive improvements, and explore automation to boost efficiency. You will collaborate with cross-functional partners while managing multiple priorities in a fast-evolving environment. This is an opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven newsroom by ensuring robust financial operations that enable informed storytelling.

Responsibilities
  • Execute general ledger activities, including journal entries and month-/year-end closes
  • Prepare accurate financial statements and perform variance analyses
  • Interpret GAAP in collaboration with management to ensure compliance
  • Develop and maintain clear accounting process documentation
  • Identify automation opportunities and implement process improvements
  • Prepare documentation for annual statements, tax/compliance filings, and audits
  • Support internal and external audits with timely data
  • Lead or contribute to special projects, analyses, and ad hoc reporting
  • Deliver service to stakeholders and foster cross-department collaboration
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • At least 3 years of progressive accounting or auditing experience
  • Proven expertise in general ledger operations and financial reporting
  • Proficient with data analytics platforms and data visualization tools (e.g., Alteryx, Power BI)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, Power Pivot)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prepare and analyze complex financial statements
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention to detail
