Overview

As Litigation & Employment Counsel at Checkr, you lead state and federal litigation strategy while guiding the People team on employment matters. You will partner with cross-functional teams to manage risk and advance fairness in Checkr's products and processes. You tackle discovery, investigations, and compliance matters, shaping legal strategy in a fast-paced tech environment. This role offers influence across product, policy, and people operations to reduce risk and support growth. You'll join a collaborative team solving complex challenges at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and execute all litigation matters, subpoenas and related demands
  • Lead discovery, fact-gathering, and witness preparation
  • Review pleadings and litigation documents, coordinate with outside counsel
  • Provide compliance counseling to operations to mitigate litigation risk
  • Advise People/HR on employment lifecycle issues including leaves, wage/hour, and worker classification
  • Build cross-functional relationships to implement product and process improvements
  • Develop understanding of the Fair Credit Reporting Act and applicable state laws for Checkr products and services
Key requirements
  • JD degree and CA bar admission in good standing
  • 5+ years of substantive litigation experience, including employment matters
  • Experience with FCRA, criminal law, or international employment counseling a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently with attention to detail and sound judgment
  • Pragmatic risk strategist with clear communication to business stakeholders
  • Bias for action and ownership with tenacity in the face of ambiguity
