Sr. Claim Counsel - Surety, Construction Services

Overview

In this role you will provide legal analysis and advocacy for Bond & Specialty Insurance claims, supporting both claim handling and underwriting teams. You will manage outside counsel, guide recovery and loss mitigation, and help shape strategic claim initiatives. You'll contribute to a culture of collaboration and innovation while ensuring strong legal coverage determinations. This is an opportunity to influence complex claims across multiple lines and to support Travelers' mission of trusted risk guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze, investigate, and resolve BSI claims of varying severity with limited supervision
  • Prepare management reports on loss development, exposure, reserves, and strategy
  • Manage outside counsel, litigation budgets, and discovery plans
  • Communicate significant exposures to underwriting
  • Identify and coordinate recovery opportunities with Recovery Management
  • Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and depositions
  • Provide legal review and advice to underwriters on bond obligations (Certain sections apply to Surety)
  • Draft and negotiate settlements, releases, and policy interpretations with case law where relevant
  • Support underwriting marketing efforts and contribute to customer-focused white papers
Key requirements
  • Six+ years of relevant legal or claim handling experience
  • Ability to resolve conflicts professionally and negotiate terms within authority
  • Strong verbal and written communication for coverage determinations
  • Time management with multiple priorities and meticulous data focus
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with colleagues and business partners
  • Bachelor's Degree and Juris Doctorate Degree
  • Licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction and in good standing
  • Three years of relevant legal experience
  • Willingness to obtain/maintain adjusters' licenses
