Overview In this role you will lead complex defense litigation as first chair, shaping trial strategy and directing case teams from pretrial to verdict. You will Advocate persuasively in court, manage substantial caseloads, and maintain client communication throughout. The position sits at the intersection of trial advocacy and case management within a litigation-focused firm. Responsibilities- Serve as first chair in jury and bench trials with primary courtroom advocacy
- Develop case theory, strategy, witness prep, exhibits, and demonstrative evidence
- Manage all phases of litigation: pleadings, discovery, motions, depositions, pretrial hearings
- Conduct voir dire, direct and cross-examinations, and closing arguments
- Prepare and respond to complex briefs, motions, and pleadings
- Supervise associates, paralegals, investigators, and expert witnesses; coordinate teams
- Negotiate settlements and plea agreements when appropriate while preserving client interests
- Maintain client communication on status, strategy, and outcomes
- Ensure ethical compliance, deadlines, and efficient case budgeting
Key requirements- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- Active state bar admission in the practicing jurisdiction
- Minimum 5-7 years of litigation experience with substantial courtroom exposure
- Significant first-chair trial experience preferred
- Proven track record of jury trials and favorable outcomes for defense clients
- Strong skills in litigation, trial advocacy, voir dire, witness examination, and motions
- Excellent legal research, brief-writing, and oral advocacy abilities
- Experience defending complex civil or criminal matters and coordinating expert witnesses and investigators
- Ability to manage multiple cases, supervise junior staff, and work under pressure
- Excellent client communication, high ethical standards, and zealous defense mindset
