Senior Production Underwriter - Excess/Umbrella

Overview

In this role, you will underwrite Lead Umbrella and Excess Liability accounts, balancing profitability with strong producer relationships. You'll work with a nationwide broker base across Middle Market to National commercial accounts, focusing on risk assessment, pricing, and coverage decisions. You'll collaborate across agents, claims, and internal teams to drive profitable growth while maintaining compliance. This position combines on-site collaboration with remote flexibility, within a culture that values inclusion and strong relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Lead underwriting of new and renewal Excess and Umbrella business aligned with guidelines, risk appetite, and profitability goals
  • Analyze complex exposures to determine appropriate coverage, pricing, structure, and terms
  • Manage renewals, endorsements, and policy modifications with risk mitigation and coverage enhancements
  • Gather and assess supplemental underwriting data (loss histories, Safer-SMS reports, inspections)
  • Document underwriting decisions accurately and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Build and maintain partnerships with agents, brokers, claims, and internal stakeholders
  • Promote Excess and Umbrella products to drive profitable growth and lead marketing initiatives
  • Analyze market conditions and regulatory developments to identify opportunities and adjust strategies
  • Support cross-functional communications to inform underwriting decisions
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Key requirements
  • 6-10 years of casualty underwriting experience
  • Prior Excess Liability and Commercial Umbrella underwriting experience preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience; professional designation preferred
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
  • Willingness to travel (overnight) between 10% and 50%
