Overview As AVP for ESL & MC Programs, you will lead underwriting and product strategy for employer stop loss, medical XS, and ancillary products within the Medical Business Unit. You will drive profitability, portfolio management, and cross-functional collaboration with actuaries, operations, and partners to deliver value-driven solutions. You'll shape underwriting rules, risk management, and distribution considerations while monitoring performance against targets. The role offers growth toward leadership of a small team in a dynamic, ever-changing market and a strong emphasis on client partnerships and strategic planning.

Responsibilities- Lead strategy to improve profitability, retention, and written premium for the MBU
- Evaluate portfolio performance using profitability metrics and guide continuous improvement
- Utilize underwriting tools and recommend enhancements
- Perform underwriting referral reviews and make independent decisions within authority
- Ensure compliance with underwriting rules, risk management principles, and regulations
- Manage data flows from client companies to monitor results against targets
- Develop annual business goals for client partners
- Identify new business opportunities with existing partners and coordinate with Business Development
- Build deep knowledge of department products and articulate value proposition
- Evaluate new business and renewals, provide technical/strategic feedback
- Stay aware of market trends, competitors, and emerging threats
- Advise on product development with respect to distribution, underwriting, and compliance
- Coordinate reinsurance support, including term negotiations
- Contribute to annual strategic planning, training, and projects
- Lead multi-functional teams and projects to meet goals

Key requirements- Advanced underwriting knowledge of ESL at case and portfolio levels
- Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, regulations, and guidelines
- Diverse insurance and reinsurance experience across products and functions
- Strong grasp of underwriting reporting, financial concepts, and accounting principles (IFRS & Statutory)
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Strong interpersonal skills with clients
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management abilities
- Detail-oriented and adaptable to a fast-paced environment
- Initiative to learn new skills and products
- Strong presentation, negotiation, and influencing skills
- Bachelor's degree; advanced degree a plus
- Underwriting and industry designations a plus
- 10+ years of relevant experience; 8+ years stop loss underwriting; 2+ years with reinsurance structures and contracts preferred
- Strong computer skills including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Knowledge of Connexure and/or Kevin Ugan System a plus
