Overview As Manager, you will lead underwriting audit, governance, and strategic support for the Home Office Underwriting function. You'll partner across compliance, legal, actuarial, data & analytics, and business units to improve underwriting quality, profitability, and consistency through documentation, controls, and practical processes. You'll translate observations into actionable improvements and guide governance initiatives at scale. This role blends audit discipline with strategic underwriting leadership to drive better outcomes.

Responsibilities- Plan and execute underwriting audit activity from pre-audit planning to post-audit follow-up
- Review files for adherence to authority, appetite, guidelines, rate/form requirements, and documentation standards
- Evaluate underwriting judgment, risk selection, pricing support, policy construction, and referral handling
- Identify control gaps and opportunities to improve underwriting quality and operational consistency
- Collaborate with Compliance, Legal, Regulatory, and leadership on questions identified in reviews
- Track audit findings and progress on corrective actions with periodic reporting
- Maintain and improve underwriting authority frameworks, letters of authority, referral triggers, and workflows
- Ensure referrals contain adequate analysis, rationale, and approval parameters before terms are released
- Develop governance standards promoting consistent technical underwriting discipline across units
- Support guidelines, authority levels, and referral criteria clarity and adoption of governance changes
- Translate underwriting strategy into practical guidance for field underwriters
- Develop technical underwriting resources and checklists for priority lines or topics
- Monitor adoption of standards and identify training or process improvements
- Support strategic projects including portfolio reviews, tool development, exposure assessments, and special audits
- Collaborate with Data & Analytics to identify analytics or workflow tools
- Develop implementation plans for new processes, systems, or governance changes with adoption-focused initiatives
- Provide ad hoc analytical and project support to leadership as priorities evolve
- Review emerging underwriting risks and market developments for governance impact
- Evaluate practical use of AI, automation, and external data in workflows with proper controls
- Share audit observations to drive improvement without over-defining opportunities
- Partner with various stakeholders to communicate findings and drive follow-through
- Balance audit discipline with a practical, business-oriented approach to outcomes
Key requirements- 5+ years of Property & Casualty insurance experience, preferably including E&S, specialty, multiline underwriting, underwriting audit, quality assurance, or home office underwriting roles
- Strong understanding of underwriting authority, referrals, guidelines, risk appetite, pricing support, policy construction, documentation standards, and regulatory considerations
- Ability to evaluate files and distinguish documentation gaps, process issues, control concerns, and underwriting judgment issues
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for presenting findings and recommendations
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple reviews and projects
