Overview

As Attorney/General Counsel for NYPA, you provide strategic legal counsel across business and regulatory areas, focusing on FERC, NYISO, and PSC matters. You'll draft and negotiate critical contracts, oversee project closings, and represent NYPA in rate cases and regulatory proceedings. You'll lead complex multi-disciplinary matters, mentor junior staff, and partner with leadership to align legal strategy with NYPA's mission. This role offers impact at scale in energy regulation and project development.

  • salary range: $160,000-$200,000 (Albany) / $184,000-$230,000 (White Plains)
Responsibilities
  • Provide independent legal advice on complex matters for specific business clients
  • Mentor and review work of junior attorneys and legal support staff
  • Supervise outside counsel, manage case strategies, and monitor billing
  • Draft opinions and briefs on difficult issues; handle disputes, audits, and litigation
  • Assess regulatory changes and advise senior leadership on mitigating actions
  • Present legal analyses to senior leadership and implement recommended actions
  • Develop processes, standards, and operational plans impacting NYPA's practice
  • Prepare training materials on areas of law and their impact
  • Represent NYPA in rate cases, FERC/PSC proceedings, and other disputes
  • Collaborate with business units to implement legal strategies and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Coordinate closings for large projects and asset transfers with real estate team
  • Report major developments to General Counsel/Assistant General Counsel
  • Manage relationships with internal clients and external counsel to achieve objectives
Key requirements
  • Juris Doctor Degree
  • Admitted to practice in New York State and Federal court
  • Minimum 8 years of legal experience
  • Experience in energy, litigation, commercial, finance, or employment law
  • Experience in utility industry preferred
  • Leadership and mentorship
  • Strong written and oral communication
  • Relationship-building across internal and external stakeholders
  • Regulatory affairs related to NYPSC, NYISO and FERC
  • Contract drafting and negotiations (transmission, O&M, asset transfer, PPA)
  • Litigation management and dispute resolution
