Senior Counsel, Government Investigation & Litigation

Overview

In this role you will manage outside counsel to shape litigation strategy aligned with company objectives and protect the enterprise's reputation and finances. You will lead cross-functional collaborations across business, government, clinical groups to align on risk and regulatory strategy. You will provide strategic legal advice, oversee complex investigations, and drive proactive risk mitigation and compliance initiatives. You will mentor junior attorneys, oversee outside counsel, and handle high-stakes matters with senior stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare, draft, and review highly complex legal documents and guidance; oversee work product and provide expert advice to clients and legal staff.
  • Conduct and supervise complex legal research across federal/state law, regulations, and industry standards; synthesize findings for senior stakeholders.
  • Assess legal risk and advise on critical matters; lead strategies to mitigate risk and align with business strategy; manage outside counsel on technical matters.
  • Formulate and manage legal strategy for significant initiatives; coordinate with regulatory services and government relations on advocacy; lead responses to regulatory actions.
  • Represent Kaiser Permanente in legal proceedings, negotiations, and settlements; guide remediation of risk areas during investigations; ensure adherence to settlement terms.
  • Advise on health plan and care delivery business strategies from a legal perspective; collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions.
  • Oversee junior attorneys and legal professionals; provide guidance and mentorship in a matrixed environment.
Key requirements
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience as a practicing lawyer
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in litigation (discovery, law & motion, experts, pre-trial, trial/arbitration)
  • Jurist Doctorate (JD) or equivalent; State Bar License in any state where KP does business
