Overview

In this role you will lead Allied World's Environmental Casualty Group for the West Coast, shaping strategy, product development, and underwriting discipline to drive profitable growth. You'll manage an underwriting team and broker/industry relationships, aligning with the broader Environmental Casualty leadership. You'll partner across functions to refine guidelines, pricing, and risk management while developing the region's talent. This is a mission-critical leadership role at a global specialty insurer with a strong emphasis on collaboration and professional development.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute the regional strategic plan for environmental casualty growth and profitability
  • Lead the West Coast Environmental Casualty Unit with expertise across GL, umbrella/excess, product liability, environmental consultants E&Os, pollution liability, and auto liability
  • Collaborate with National Environmental Casualty leader to standardize guidelines, pricing, risk management, and book consistency
  • Hands-on underwriting leadership: review submissions, assess exposures, authorize quotes/binders, train and mentor the team
  • Manage portfolio profitability and mix through periodic reviews and portfolio refinements
  • Maintain market-facing presence through regular broker interactions and relationship management
  • Oversee local underwriter hiring, development, and execution of the business plan
  • Ensure pricing discipline and adherence to underwriting guidelines and procedures
  • Travel for client/broker meetings and industry events as needed
  • Coordinate with Chief Underwriting Officer, actuary, claims, accounting, IT, and legal as appropriate
  • Delegate authority effectively to team members
Key requirements
  • Minimum 7 years of underwriting experience
  • At least 3 years supervisory experience
  • Bachelor's degree preferred (MBA and/or CPCU, ACII or similar, a plus)
  • Strong knowledge of casualty and product liability exposures, coverage forms, and rating for primary, excess, and auto liability
  • Proficiency in professional liability (E&O) and environmental liability preferred
  • Strong marketing skills for broker relationships and client-facing interactions
  • Self-directed with strong prioritization and deadline management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
