Overview

You will serve as a legal SME on AI, shaping compliant, responsible adoption across Vanguard's functions. You will guide cross-functional teams on AI governance and regulatory matters, balancing risk with business objectives. You'll develop and maintain AI governance frameworks, monitor evolving AI laws, and negotiate third-party AI engagements. This role combines deep technology understanding with legal expertise to enable innovative solutions while protecting clients and the firm. You'll operate in a fast-paced, collaborative environment focused on responsible AI at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Provide regulatory and compliance oversight for AI-related activities across jurisdictions (e.g., EU AI Act, Colorado AI Act)
  • Serve as SME for Vanguard Enterprise AI Governance Policy and related standards
  • Advise senior leadership on AI adoption strategy and conditions for developing AI systems
  • Develop and maintain AI governance frameworks and guardrails for responsible AI use
  • Monitor legislative developments affecting AI in financial services and asset management
  • Develop standardized contract templates and negotiate AI-related vendor agreements
  • Ensure third-party AI tools meet security, ethics, and regulatory standards
  • Participate in Enterprise AI System reviews to identify and mitigate legal risks
  • Advise on data governance, model training controls, and algorithmic transparency
  • Draft and update internal policies on AI procurement, development, and acceptable use
  • Provide training on legal implications of AI adoption
  • Collaborate with IT and Compliance to integrate AI into products and services
Key requirements
  • J.D. degree and active bar membership
  • Minimum 10 years in technology law, preferably in financial services or asset management
  • Familiarity with AI governance, data protection laws, and financial regulations
  • Strong understanding of AI technologies and machine learning in investment management
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills
  • Ability to translate complex technical issues into clear legal guidance
