Senior Corporate Counsel, Compliance - Customs

Overview

In this role you guide customs and trade compliance for a global company, partnering with business leaders to shape strategy and resolve cross-border challenges. You will help design and strengthen practical compliance programs across US and Canada, aligning legal advice with growth objectives. The position offers visibility and impact, enabling you to move from issue spotting to holistic problem solving. You'll collaborate with global legal peers to deliver high-quality support that advances Caterpillar's sustainable, customer-focused mission.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with business on day-to-day and strategic customs and trade compliance matters (import/export procedures, tariff classification, customs valuation, duty suspension, free trade agreements, rules of origin)
  • Translate regulatory developments into clear guidance for stakeholders
  • Shape and strengthen compliance programs through practical policy and control design
  • Support global trade-related strategic initiatives aligned with supply chain and growth
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with trade, logistics, tax, and commercial teams to solve problems
  • Work with global legal colleagues to deliver coordinated, high-quality support
Key requirements
  • J.D. or equivalent law degree with strong academics
  • Active Bar admission in any U.S. state or in-house practice eligibility in the work location
  • Meaningful law firm and/or in-house experience in US customs regulations and practices (four years of progressively advancing experience typical)
  • Exposure to global trade issues or cross-border transactions a plus
  • Effective communication and collaboration across levels and functions
  • Decision making and critical thinking
