Overview In this role you will represent state officials and agencies in appeals and civil litigation. You will work within the Constitutional & Administrative Law Division to defend statutes, regulations, and agency decisions in state and federal courts. You will handle a mix of trial and appellate work, including a substantial number of appeals each year. This position offers a public-service focused environment with opportunities to influence state policy and governance. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to uphold constitutional and administrative law principles.

Responsibilities- Represent state officials and agencies in appeals and litigation in state and federal courts regarding statutes, regulations, policies, and agency decisions
- Defend constitutional and statutory challenges to state laws and regulations
- Handle litigation involving state policies, programs, and agency adjudicatory decisions
- Manage trial and appellate litigation, with participation in approximately 80 appeals per year
- Collaborate with the broader Government Bureau and other teams to support public-law objectives
Key requirements- Active membership of the Massachusetts bar or pending admission
- Active membership of the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts bar or eligible for admission soon
- 3-5 years of relevant legal experience preferred
- Familiarity with constitutional law, administrative law, civil and appellate procedure, and trial practice
- Strong legal writing skills and ability to independently manage litigation
- Demonstrated interest in public service and collaborative, public-law environment
