EPL & D&O Liability Associate Claim Counsel

Overview

In this role you support Bond & Specialty Insurance claims by analyzing and resolving matters with close involvement from claims leadership. You'll advise underwriting and non-attorney colleagues while guiding outside counsel through litigation management. Expect to handle coverage issues, loss development analysis, and settlement negotiations, contributing to strategic initiatives and risk mitigation. The position blends legal expertise with claims execution in a collaborative, customer-focused environment.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and resolve BSI claims of varying severity under supervision
  • Prepare management reports on loss development, exposure, reserves, coverage, and recovery strategies
  • Manage outside counsel with litigation plans and budgets
  • Communicate significant claim exposures to underwriting
  • Attend mediations, trials, and conferences as needed
  • Identify recovery opportunities and coordinate with Recovery Management and Claims
  • Draft coverage opinions with case law and refine policy interpretations
  • Negotiate settlements and review settlements with confidentiality provisions
  • Support underwriting and marketing efforts with client-facing materials and risk mitigation seminars
  • Research marketplace conditions and draft reference materials for claims and underwriting
  • Obtain and maintain adjuster licenses
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Key requirements
  • 1-5 years of relevant legal or claim handling experience
  • Strong conflict resolution and professional demeanor
  • Sound decision-making and negotiation within authority
  • Excellent verbal and written communication for coverage determinations
  • Strong time management and attention to detail in multi-priority settings
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, and partners
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Juris Doctorate Degree
  • Properly licensed or eligible to practice law in the working jurisdiction
