Overview

As Staff Architect, you translate user needs into architectural concepts for labs, offices, and secure spaces. You'll bridge traditional design with owner-led delivery, guidingprojects from concept through construction documentation and closeout. You work within a multidisciplinary facilities team to develop scope, ensure design compliance, and maintain MIT facilities standards. This role shapes the campus design language and supports complex, occupied environments with regulatory and technical rigor. You'll collaborate across teams to deliver impactful, compliant facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with end users to develop scope and prepare approval materials
  • Assess existing spaces and recommend improvements
  • Develop space plans and SD/DD/CD documents using AutoCAD and REVIT
  • Prepare client/management approvals documentation
  • Perform Building Code reviews and prepare specifications
  • Provide construction administration support including bids, RFIs, submittals, and closeout
  • Review design packages from outside design firms for compliance with MIT standards
  • Collaborate to develop and maintain design standards for laboratory campus
  • Coordinate with in-house SMEs (security, ISD, Operations) on design development
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture
  • Licensed Registered Architect in Massachusetts or ability to obtain within 1 year
  • Experience in Research/Laboratory and office renovations in aging/occupied environments
  • Proficient with building codes and regulatory requirements (IBC, NFPA, ADA, MA State)
  • Experience with AutoCAD and REVIT; Procore; Bluebeam/Adobe; Office suite
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to manage multiple projects
  • Clear writing and presentation skills; ability to create detailed scope/program documents
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain DoD security clearance
