Overview In this role you lead the strategic development and execution of underwriting and business objectives for a property portfolio within Markel. You'll guide regional underwriting teams, shape risk selection and pricing, and ensure profitability, growth, and service quality across primary and excess properties. You'll partner with cross-functional groups to deliver integrated solutions and coach a high-performing team in a collaborative, problem-solving culture. Responsibilities- Develop and execute regional business, underwriting, and marketing strategies in coordination with leadership
- Manage underwriting activities to meet profit, premium, production, loss ratio, expense, growth, revenue, and retention targets
- Underwrite and review risk across small to large property portfolios within delegated authority
- Lead and develop property underwriters and support staff, balancing workloads and performance
- Monitor underwriting quality and ensure work products align with strategy and standards, providing targeted coaching
- Collaborate with wholesale brokers, agents, and internal teams to coordinate services and solutions
- Coordinate with Actuarial, Claims, IT, and other groups to deliver cross-functional solutions
- Delegate underwriting authority via letters of authority and monitor adherence to guidelines
- Provide coaching and training based on underwriting audits and results
- Ensure processing and service standards are met and communicate issues to Marketing
- Maintain knowledge of Markel products and initiate cross-unit discussions to optimize solutions
- Drive change and innovation in response to evolving business needs
Key requirements- Approximately 15 years of property underwriting experience
- Strong technical judgment in risk selection and pricing
- Experience managing and mentoring underwriters and staff
- Strong broker relationships and customer service, communication, analytical, and time-management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CAT modeling systems; underwriter systems experience; CoPilot or AI experience a plus
- Bachelor's degree preferred; CPCU designation preferred
- Ability to travel 25%
