Overview

In this remote Life Underwriting Consultant role, you assess and underwrite highly complex life insurance cases within Nationwide's Brokerage General Agency. You will balance deep technical judgment with clear communication to support brokers and clients, guiding cases from submission to decision. You'll operate in a less automated environment, valuing nuanced analysis, collaboration, and leadership on projects. The role offers exposure to sophisticated brokerage underwriting, with a focus on judgment, partnership, and professional development.

Responsibilities
  • Underwrite complex life insurance applications up to authority, ensuring mortality risk is accurately classified
  • Maintain knowledge of underwriting policies, manuals, and procedures; uphold confidentiality
  • Coordinate evidence of insurability requests (medical exams, labs, reports, interviews)
  • Apply risk-based decision-making in accelerated underwriting and alternative information sources
  • Handle financial underwriting, reinsurance terms, and special/ob unusual cases
  • Lead and train less experienced underwriters; participate in project planning and training delivery
  • Consult with field partners and internal stakeholders; present findings and negotiate terms
  • Interpret ECG tracings and consult with Medical Director as needed
  • Manage temporary insurance eligibility and policy refunds, and authorize related expenses
  • Support goals across territories and agent programs; resolve time/quality challenges
  • Demonstrate independent judgment within underwriting authority; contribute to process improvements
  • May travel for partner meetings and field visits
  • Overtime flexible; remote work option; non-standard hours may apply
Key requirements
  • Ten years of life underwriting experience
  • Strong knowledge of medical and financial underwriting concepts and practices
  • Proficiency in reinsurance terms and facultative underwriting
  • Ability to manage highly complex cases with strong negotiation and decision-making skills
  • Experience training and mentoring other underwriters
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; collaboration and presentation skills
  • Ability to work with ambiguity and adapt quickly
  • ECG interpretation capability; Medical Director consultation experience
  • Licensure/Designation: AALU; CLU/FLMI coursework or designation preferred; EKG certification preferred
