Senior Underwriting Consultant

Overview

In this role you drive high impact underwriting decisions and guide junior colleagues to ensure policy compliance and quality. You work independently to resolve complex cases, lead process improvements, and share expertise through training and mentoring. You'll audit and review underwriting decisions, medical records, and appeals while collaborating with a self-directed team to support risk assessment and business objectives. Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and manage the most complex underwriting cases
  • Identify and propose solutions for workflow and system issues
  • Provide training and act as a knowledge resource to junior underwriters
  • Process formal underwriting appeals and complaints
  • Audit underwriting decisions, documentation, and medical records for guideline compliance
  • Review contestable claims for misrepresentation risk
  • Monitor and review underwriting fraud referrals and book of business
  • Support management with research projects related to risk assessment
  • Maintain professional standards and project a positive image to the team
Key requirements
  • College graduate or business equivalent
  • 7+ years of underwriting experience or exposure
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting functions and John Hancock's businesses
  • Strong knowledge of referral areas
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical skills with problem-solving ability
  • Ability to build and maintain customer relationships
  • Ability to prioritize under deadlines and balance service times with customer focus
  • Strong knowledge of company plans, riders, benefits and illustrations
  • Knowledge of medical science, technology, terminology and their impact on morbidity
