Overview In this role you drive mechanical estimating for complex projects, shaping preconstruction strategy and cost leadership. You'll guide technical direction, mentor the team, and ensure accurate, competitive estimates that support successful outcomes. You work closely with cross-functional teams and clients, translating design options into actionable budgets. Responsibilities- Lead mechanical estimating strategy for complex projects and develop bid and proposal approaches.
- Provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and promote estimating best practices.
- Evaluate design options with lean principles to improve outcomes.
- Prepare shadow estimates and manage estimates from concept to GMP/final bid; review drawings and documentation to define scope and pricing.
- Develop general conditions estimates, budgets, RFIs, and preliminary schedules; maintain backup documentation and identify VE opportunities.
- Lead subcontractor solicitation, bid leveling, and procurement strategies; engage in pre-bid meetings and client presentations.
- Assess project risks, market conditions, and cost trends; prepare estimate reviews including overhead, profit, and commercial assumptions.
- Collaborate with PM, engineering, VDC, and field teams; align estimate with project execution and handoff to clients.
Key requirements- 5+ years of estimating and/or engineering experience
- Mechanical design-build experience preferred
- Significant experience in mechanical estimating within commercial, industrial, or mission-critical environments
- Advanced knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, heavy process piping, estimating techniques, and cost control
- Ability to read specifications and drawings; experience with process piping and high-pressure systems
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex estimates and coordinate multi-discipline efforts
- Strong communication, presentation, and teaching skills; ability to influence stakeholders
- Knowledge of CSI divisions and health and safety regulations affecting cost
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software/tools
- Valid driver's license
- Familiarity with BIM/VDC tools and digital estimating platforms (preferred)
