Job description

Job Description Job Description

The Corporate Safety Manager leads the company's overall safety program across all divisions and active project sites, setting the strategic direction for making safety the organization's number one priority. This role owns the company's safety record, drives incident and near-miss reduction, builds and enforces a safety-first culture at every level of the workforce, and serves as the primary point of contact between the company, its insurance broker, outside safety consultants, and regulatory bodies (OSHA, and for federal work, EM 385-1-1 requirements). The Corporate Safety Manager also directs and supports division-level and project-level safety personnel, including the Electrical Safety Manager and any project-assigned (including contract) safety managers on individual jobs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve the company-wide safety program and policies across all divisions (commercial, federal, electrical, and craft operations).

• Set annual safety goals and strategy in coordination with executive leadership; report on progress at leadership and superintendent meetings.

• Own and report the company's safety record, including tracking incidents, near misses, and leading/lagging indicators over rolling periods (e.g., trailing 6-month and 12-month reviews).

• Lead root-cause investigations for incidents and near misses; drive corrective actions and follow-through across project teams.

• Build and reinforce a safety-first mentality across the workforce through training, toolbox talks, recognition programs, and visible leadership engagement on jobsites.

• Directly manage and support division/project-level safety staff, including the Electrical Safety Manager and project-assigned safety managers (including contract safety managers on individual projects such as project-specific hires).

• Define roles, responsibilities, and reporting structure for safety positions company-wide, and participate in the hiring and onboarding of safety personnel.

• Coordinate with the company's insurance broker on EMR management, claims trends, policy renewals, and loss-control recommendations (e.g., fleet safety technology/vendor selection).

• Partner with outside safety consultants/firms as needed to support candidate vetting, specialized audits, and safety program benchmarking.

• Ensure compliance with OSHA 1926 (Construction), OSHA 1910 (General Industry) as applicable, and EM 385-1-1 for federal projects.

• Work with HR on safety-related policy needs, including emerging requirements such as heat illness prevention/heat mitigation programs.

• Oversee jobsite audits and inspections across all divisions, ensuring consistent standards regardless of project type or location.

• Manage and report on the company's CMMC and other compliance-adjacent safety/security requirements as they intersect with federal contract obligations.

• Present safety updates, trends, and new strategies at leadership meetings and superintendent meetings on a recurring basis.

• Support new project mobilizations with site-specific safety plans (SSSPs/APPs), safety orientations, and hazard assessments.

• Manage the safety training calendar and ensure required certifications (OSHA 10/30, first aid/CPR, equipment-specific training, etc.) stay current company-wide.

• Drive efficiency and accuracy of daily job box talks and safety huddles.

• Conduct annual safety training and recertification efforts for all employees.

• Ensure all tools required for annual certification are tracked and processed in a timely fashion.

• Ensure that all fire extinguishers are recertified annually company wide.

• Ensure all project level employees are properly trained on and assigned appropriate PPE as required.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Construction Management, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered in lieu of degree.

• Minimum 7-10 years of construction safety experience, including at least 3 years in a multi-site or corporate-level safety leadership role.

• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation strongly preferred; CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician) also valued.

• OSHA 30-Hour Construction required; OSHA 500 (Trainer Course) strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated experience managing safety programs across multiple divisions or business lines, including electrical, mechanical, or other specialty trades.

• Experience with federal construction safety requirements (EM 385-1-1) required for companies performing NAVFAC/USACE work.

• Experience overseeing or coordinating with insurance brokers on EMR, claims, and loss control preferred.

• Prior experience of hiring, training, and managing safety staff or supervising a safety team.

• Strong presentation and communication skills; comfortable presenting safety performance and strategy to executive leadership and field superintendents.

• Proficient with safety management software, incident reporting systems, and Microsoft Office.

• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly across all active project sites.

• Ability to navigate company software programs such spectrum project site and/or Procore.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

• Ability to work on active construction sites, including exposure to heights, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions.

• Ability to wear and properly use required PPE across a range of trade-specific hazards (electrical, fall protection, excavation, etc.).

• Ability to walk, stand, climb ladders/stairs, and navigate uneven terrain for extended periods during site audits.

• Frequent travel between project sites and corporate office; some overnight travel required.

Core Competencies

• Strategic safety leadership - able to set direction and hold divisions accountable to a single safety standard.

• Strong communicator and culture-builder, able to influence behavior from the field to the executive level.

• Data-driven - comfortable tracking, analyzing, and reporting safety metrics and trends.

• Sound judgment and authority to stop work company-wide when unsafe conditions are identified.

• Collaborative partner to HR, insurance, project management, and executive leadership.
