People Systems Manager (Payroll/HCM Manager)

Overview

In this role, you will own and optimize the Workday Payroll module to deliver accurate, compliant pay for 2,000+ Cartans globally. You'll design scalable integrations with Core HCM, Time Tracking, Absence, and Benefits, partnering with HRIS and Integrations teams. You will act as the main liaison between Payroll and the People team, ensuring governance and auditable configuration. You'll drive payroll testing, releases, and issue resolution to keep payroll timely and compliant. This is a hands-on, impact-focused role within the People Systems Team that shapes how Carta processes and supports global employees.

Responsibilities
  • Own Payroll Configuration: configure, maintain, and troubleshoot the Workday Payroll module for accurate pay results
  • Build Scalable Integration: integrate payroll with Core HCM, Time Tracking, Absence, Compensation, and Benefits
  • Own the Stakeholder Relationship: serve as primary liaison between Payroll and People teams
  • Anchor in Core HCM: align payroll decisions with broader HCM foundations
  • Drive Testing & Releases: lead payroll-impact analysis, regression testing, and validation
  • Troubleshoot & Resolve: act as escalation point for payroll configuration issues
  • Document & Govern: maintain clear configuration documentation and governance
Key requirements
  • 6-8+ years of hands-on Workday Payroll configuration experience
  • Strong Core HCM background (organizations, staffing, business processes)
  • Solid understanding of payroll fundamentals (earnings, deductions, tax setup, pay calculation)
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into system configuration
  • Comfortable managing configuration changes through testing, validation, and release cycles
  • Strong attention to detail and a compliance-first mindset
  • Proficient in core payroll mechanisms (earnings, deductions, tax configurations, pay calculations)
  • Experience with cross-functional HR/People partnerships to translate requirements into technical settings
